"It is just the Mets’ luck, stuck in the division of dynasties. The Atlanta Braves tormented them from 1995 to 2005, rolling to 11 consecutive National League East titles. The Philadelphia Phillies took over in 2007, piling on the misery, and have won the last four. A fifth is expected next season, as the addition of Cliff Lee practically instructs the rest of the league to abandon all hope ye who enter Citizens Bank Park.

Hope is what the Mets will hold fast to in what should be a transitional 2011 season, as their new regime tries to purge onerous contracts, institute an energetic style of play and reinvigorate the fan base. But a tangible — and, some would say, more realistic — prize should be within reach as soon as 2012, when the Mets’ path to the playoffs could become somewhat easier because of postseason expansion.

Adding an extra wild-card berth in each league is less a possibility at this point than an inevitability"

The Mets have, somehow, out-The Apple’d The Apple, which is a hilarious, The Onion-esque satirical website that’s all about our favorite baseball team. Can we be honest here and say that the MVP of the Mets so far this offseason is hilarity?

So what are we even talking about here? Press play and see. You’ll enjoy quite the promotional video for 2011 Citi Field tickets, that was produced to look like a piece of SNY Breaking News. It even has a “press conference.” Talk about your red herring! So the burning question: who’s the best actor in this… piece? Is it Kevin? Sandy? Terry? Or is it anybody who doesn’t laugh while they watch this?

You have to hand it to them: they really are trying with this PR stuff. Most of it has been completely spot-on, but this? A tad silly.

I bet that’s not even Sandy’s office! But that’s just a nitpick. Enjoy, folks.

Ted Berg: Mets should sign Pedro Martinez

"I heard a little bit,” Beltran said. “I heard because of my family. I’m not really into the computer searching. All those are rumors. I didn’t receive a call from my agent. I didn’t receive a call from the organization. So I don’t worry about it. The only thing I have to worry about is putting myself in the situation where I can go to spring training and help this team. I’m a Met. And I’m going to continue to work hard until I know something different."

"The Mets are wise to cultivate new communication strategies. The team is clearly aware of the same PR trends that have led President Obama to post YouTube videos and speak directly to the public, rather than always do so through the news media.

Fine. But you, the intelligent consumers of Mets information, know the difference between this and real news. Alderson’s direct communication comes with the stamp of Official Message. The questions in the video chat were obviously selected by people who work for the Mets, which is quite different from a session with journalists. Alderson regularly meets with reporters, and there is nothing wrong with circumventing that at times. The Mets should be forward-thinking in the use of their official website. We’re just saying that it is what it is.

The conference call with bloggers served a different function; obviously, the Mets did not control the questions, but they offered fan bloggers—whose advantage is their independence—access, the very thing that corrupts many journalists. By dialing into that call, bloggers stepped into the same ethically murky conflict of access vs. the ability to criticize that we MSM types face every minute. Many bloggers will be able to manage this inherent conflict well, as do many journalists—for the Mets, though, it was a smart attempt to corral some of the creators of public opinion. Worth noting, is all."

My favorite portion:

“I’m very familiar with the blogosphere, and how it makes connections with fans… People are going to form their own opinions, but if you’ve heard from me, it’ll be on the basis of direct communication. I don’t mind spending the time. In a sense, you guys probably reflect the most passionate elements of the fan base. If I’m right about that, it’s more important to be in contact with you all than the rest of the media.”

Welcome to the New New York Mets.
